usmcsis's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bookworm so i'm sitting here deciding whether or not i want to ride to the bookstore for a bit. i have a list of about twenty titles i want to look at. when i hear about a book that someone has read and they're all like, you have to read this and so on, i have to hold the book in my hands. i have to read the blurby on the back cover and then i usually read the first page, or sometimes the first chapter, before i decide if i'm going to read it. and since i'll read just about anything the answer is usually yes. lol but i want a book that speaks to me. that probably sounds weird. or maybe it only sounds weird to you folks who don't read much or who don't like to read. books talk to you. and i don't mean the characters in the books. of course, they talk to you too. they tell you their story, and sometimes, if the character is well written and placed in a well written story, they can tell you more than what's written on the page. you get to know them and you see them as a person and not just words on a page. but books talk to you too. in a different sort of way. it isn't something i can really explain without sounding like i need a vacation in a padded room though. it's something you either feel or you don't. some of it is marketing of course. a clever cover, an attractive font, but it's that and so much more. it's the weight of the book in your hands. the sound it makes when you open it for the first time. the whisper of the pages as you turn from page to page. the smell of the paper and the ink. it's the anticipation of the story the words are going to tell. it's the promise of a new journey to a new place with new people. sound kind of like a dork don't i? 8:14 pm - 26 Jul 2004 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
